What Brings Out The Best In Your Species?
People are funny. It’s true. We are a goofy group just trying to survive each day, some thriving, some gladly unconscious, others winging it and heck there are even the occasional superstars. It’s the nature of the beast.
With all species, and yes, we are a species, there is a hierarchy, territories, and ways of order and operating that are designed to ensure survival. Each animal in that species has a role or function that contributes to the species survival and without it the species existence is vulnerable. For example, when we look at a a pack of coyotes we can easily see their hierarchy, ways of order and how each contributes to their survival. We clearly see and understand their whole culture. However, we don’t look at ourselves as species, as a culture and how we fit into the survival of that culture.
Business As A Species…
To understand how business works as a species, we have to pull ourselves out of our everyday thing and look at ourselves like a pack or a herd, then we can understand. From this view, we see that all packs work differently. Sure, there are inherent rules that all packs follow, but not all packs work the same as a community. When we see ourselves as a species, we can put the labels away, we can understand our place in the pack, in the community for survival.
As you take this apart in business and drive it down to that denominator, employees get to a very natural place of understanding with their role in the business. Thereby removing personality, opinions and judgments from the job. It gets down to “basic form and function”, which is what efficiency and effectiveness are built on. It’s what brings out the best in a species.
